Duke Jr. He spent his childhood in Carthage and Atlanta, TX. In his essays, Danny often harked back to his childhood in rural Texas and the values he learned there. A gifted musician, he was one of the last two students of his piano teacher, Mrs. Wideman; Van Cliburn was the other student. Danny graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree. While in college, Danny worked his way through school playing piano at The Barn Restaurant. He entered medical school at the U.T. Health Science Center in San Antonio in 1979 and again used his musical talent to earn money by playing piano at Durty Nelly's and The San Francisco Steak House. He completed a medical internship in San Antonio before he and Judy moved to Rochester, Minnesota, to the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, where he completed his ophthalmology training, which included a six-month stint in Nigeria. Upon his return to San Antonio in 1977, Danny opened his one-man practice that he continued until the time of his death. A caring and talented physician, Danny was blessed with many other gifts. He was an avid golfer, a fabulous cook and a connoisseur of authentic Southern cooking he once wrote an ode to chicken fried steak that he loved. A fine photographer, his pictures of Texas wildflowers and his wonderful portraits were published in various publications and adorn the walls of his friend's homes. Danny had an inexhaustible repertoire of songs, and when Danny sat down at the piano, the party became truly unforgettable. 'Unforgettable' was also one of his favorite songs that he would play while his daughter, Lisa, sang. Danny served on the Board of Directors of the Bexar County Medical Society, and was Chairman of the Bexar County Delegation to the House of Delegates of the Texas Medical Association. He was President of the U.T. Medical School Alumni Association and President of the San Antonio Society of Ophthalmology and was an active member of the Conopus Club.
