Atlanta ISD is accredited by the Texas Education Agency. Located in Atlanta, Cass County, Texas, 25 miles south of Texarkana on U.S, Highway 59, there are 215 square miles in the district. AISD owns approximately 250 acres of land with five campuses. Atlanta Primary School serves Pre-Kindergarten through second grade. Atlanta Elementary School serves grades three through five. Atlanta Middle School serves sixth through eighth grades. Atlanta High School has grades nine through twelve. The Corrective Behavior Center is an alternative education school serving grades five through twelve. The football stadium/track field seats 5,000 with an athletic office and field house. The high school auditorium seats 1,000. There is also a special education administrative building for Cass County Co-op. The AISD professional staff numbers 165. The support staff, consisting of clerical, food service, transportation and maintenance, numbers 135. Enrollment is 1,900 with a student/teacher ratio of 12.9 to 1. On an average day, half of the students ride 1,250 miles on the school buses. During the year there are 234,000 regular route miles, and 43,600 extracurricular miles. The Curriculum... Students in Atlanta ISD receive a high quality basic eduation, as well as an individualized educational program to accomodate their needs. The district's educational philosophy stresses academics with a student-centered approach and diversified curriculum offerings. Primary and Elementary Language arts, science, mathematics, social studies, physical education, health, art, music, and computer literacy are the basic subjects. Special emphasis is placed on reading, writing and math. Middle School A more diversified academic curriculum is added for students in grades 6-8. Elective courses are offered in speech, art, and home economics. Middle school students and teachers work on interdisciplinary academic teams. The innovative teaming concept groups students and teachers in English, math, science, social studies and reading. High School The district's high school is on block scheduling. Advanced placement, dual college/high school credit classes are offered. Additional specialized classes such as band, theatre, journalism, speech, French, Spanish, pre-calculus, calculus, and computer classes are offered. Career technology classes include agriculture, home economics, auto mechanics, business and marketing. Special Programs Supplementing the goal for excellence and equity are full extracurricular programs, drug education, health services, and guidance and counseling for all students. Gifted and Talented, ESL, Content Mastery, Dyslexia Program, and special education programs supplement the regular curriculum. Athletic Program Atlanta ISD has outstanding programs in football, basketball, cross country, track, tennis, golf, girls' volleyball, girls' softball and boys' baseball. The athletic program is playoff proven - success speaks for itself. Band Program Encompassing grades 6 -12, the Atlanta ISD Sweepstakes winning Band Program has performing groups at all levels. Inclusive in the instrumental music program are many individual performance opportunities including All-Region Band, All-District Band, and Solo-Ensemble competitions. Atlanta bands have traditionally been successful in all facets of UIL competition. The goal oriented music education department strives to create well-rounded individuals with an appreciation of the fine arts. Corrective Behavior Center (CBC) The alternative school is located on a separate campus which enables students having problems in a regular school setting to be placed in a setting where they can function properly. Programs ACADEMIC AWARDS - Assembly held annually to recognize students for academic achievement. Other honor students are recognized at an event for students and their families. (6-12) ACADEMIC UIL - Students compete in district events. High school students are eligible to participate in regional and state events. (Grades 2-12) ACCELERATED READER PROGRAM - School-wide incentive program designed to promote reading. Students accumulate points by completing computer generated tests over books they have read. Earned points are redeemed for prizes. (K-8) ACT/SAT SCORES - High school students taking ACT and SAT make scores above the state average. ACT TEST SITE - Atlanta High School is an ACT test site for area students. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM - Tutorial sessions held twice weekly for homework help and remediation for all students. (K-8), with daily help available at the high school level (9-12). AG PROGRAM - High school students win consistently at the district and area levels, as well as competitions held in Ft. Worth and Houston. AMS PRIDE - Extensive student reward/recognition program highlighting excellence in academics, attendance, and student improvement culminating in AMS Pride Rally for students and parents. (6-8) COLLEGE EDGE- Computerized system located at middle and high schools to give information to students regarding colleges, scholarships, careers, etc. (6-12) COLLEGE NIGHT - Hosted by Atlanta High School each fall for students and parents in Atlanta and several area schools. Colleges are represented and financial aid workshops are held. (10-11) COMMUNITY SERVICE - Students at all grade levels participate in activities during the holiday season; helping the elderly, needy and children. (K-12) COMPUTER LABS - Students on all campuses are instructed in TAAS practice and remediation as well as Writing to Read for K-2; computer assisted instruction in reading, writing and math for 3-8; science instruction for 6-8; business computer information systems for 9-12; TAAS practice and remediation lab for 9-12. CONTENT MASTERY - Tutoring system designed to help Special Education and Title I students complete daily lesson assignments. (1-12) DARE - Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, taught by Atlanta Police Department personnel, teaches about drug and alcohol use and violence. (5-7. Visitation in lower grades) DECA - High school marketing students consistently win in state level competition - eligible for national level competition. DUKE UNIVERSITY SCHOLARS - Seventh graders with high achievement test scores qualify to take ACT or SAT with high school students. Several students have qualified for state and national level recognition. (7) EARLY ADMISSION - Students can receive at least 12 semester hours in early admission program at Texarkana College. (11-12) EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM - For 3 and 4-year-old children who are handicapped and need early intervention services. (Primary school) EDUCATIONAL TALENT SEARCH - Program funded through U.S. Department of Education to help students with academic and career interests and needs. (9-12) EXCEPTIONAL CHILDRENS' OLYMPICS - Originated and hosted by Atlanta Primary School for special students from Cass County. EXTENDED YEAR/SUMMER SCHOOL - Summer accelerated instruction for students who fail or are near failure with emphasis on math and language arts. (K-12) FIELD DAY - Students compete each May in various activities with ribbons and trophies awarded to individuals and classrooms. (PreK-5) FIELD TRIPS - Student participation in educational, cultural, and entertaining field trips (PreK-12). JOB FAIR - Annual job fair to interview prospective teachers for the system. JUMP ROPE FOR HEART - Students through P.E. annually participate in fundraiser for heart research. (2) KUMON MATH - Emphasizes problem solving in math and allows students to be self-paced. (K) LEARNING RESOURCE CENTERS - Each campus has a certified librarian to maintain books, teacher journals, magazines, newspapers, and audio/visual equipment. Centers are automated using Unison software. Middle, elementary and the high school have on-line research materials. (PreK-12) MATH/READING LITERACY - Students receive daily remediation in reading and math skills to bring them to grade level. (K-2) MEDIA HONOR ROLL - Board of Trustees present awards to local media recognizing their coverage of school activities. MENTOR SCHOOL - Atlanta Middle School selected as Mentor School by Texas Education Agency. Participation in statewide network dedicated to improving education (6-8). MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH & SCIENCE - Students compete with other schools in mathand science contests. Several students have won at the state meet. (6-8) MS READATHON - Students participate in this reading program designed to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis research. (2) NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - Commended, Semi-Finalist, and Finalist Scholars have been named in the last few years. (11-12) PALS - Students are selected by peers and teachers to help in new student orientation, peer-tutoring, and community service. (7-8) PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT - Counselors present Practical Parent Education programs on self-esteem, birth order, motivation, school success, discipline, etc. Parents/guardians invited to participate. (PreK - 12) PARENT PARTICIPATION DAY - Parents of Primary School students invited to visit their child's classroom to listen to demonstration lesson. (PreK-2) PARTNERS IN READING - Volunteers listen to Primary students read on a weekly basis. (K-2) PARTNERSHIPS WITH BUSINESSES - Over 50 area businesses and entities give money, time and advice to all campuses. Some employ high school students. Others donate money and/or merchandise to schools for awards in various programs. (PreK-12 benefit from these services) PRE-KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM - Successful readiness program to prepare students for Kindergarten. PUBLIC RELATIONS - District-wide school newsletter, publications, newspaper and radio announcements complete the public relations program for the school system. READING RECOVERY PROGRAM - Students who are at risk of not learning to read are given one-on-one intense instruction program to bring them to grade level. (1) RED RIBBON WEEK - Students engage in a variety of activities during drug prevention week in October each year. (PreK-12) ST JUDE'S MATH-A-THON - Students participate in this math program designed to raise money for St. Jude's Cancer Research (6-8) SAXON MATH/READING - Diversified hands-on math program for students to use reading and problem solving skills. (K-2) SCHOLARSHIPS - Over $1 million awarded each year to graduating seniors given by colleges, businesses, clubs, and individuals. (12) SCIENCE LABS - Fully equipped science labs are available for students to engage in "hands-on" activities. (3-12) SHURLEY LANGUAGE - Students learn to classify sentences by following a specific series of question and answer flows done in a rhythmic, enthusiastic manner. (1-5) SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION - Students compete in poster making contest. Have had winners in competition. (K-2) SPOTLIGHT ON READING - Primary and Elementary named in statewide reading program. STAR AWARD - Student, Teacher/Employee Achievement Recognition (STAR) Award presented by Board of Trustees recognizes students, staff or local businesses. SUMMER MATH ACADEMY - Two-week summer program designed for high achieving math students to further enhance their problem solving and creative thinking capabilities. (4-summer after 4th grade year and 6-8) TAAS TEST SCORES - Students have consistently scored at or above state average on TAAS tests. (3-10) TAKING ACHIEVEMENT ANOTHER STEP - AHS students are given the opportunity to participate in a concentrated TAAS workshop to increase awareness of test taking strategies, enhance self confidence, and improve individual test results. (11-12) TAMU INTERNSHIP PROGRAM - Participation with TEXAS A&M -Texarkana in student teaching program (PreK-12) TECH PREP - High school participates in area program. Received job shadowing grants. TEXAS SCHOLARS -Cass Academic Partners in Scholarship (CAPS) encourages students to take more science, math and higher level classes. Students recognized at end of senior year. (9-12) TOP TEN TITLE I CAMPUS - Primary and Elementary named statewide compensatory association schools. WINGS - Student learning system targeting self-esteem, critical thinking and problem solving. (PreK) YES - Youth Experiencing Success program recognizing academic achievement. (3-5) ZEROS AREN'T PERMITTED (ZAP) - Program allowing students to receive a 70 on homework not completed on time.
